   Armed Robbery Awareness 

In today's society armed robbery is a fact of life and can happen to any person in any location:

Robbery is the unlawful taking of property, without consent, accompanied by force or threat of force from a person or organisation.


All retailers and licensed premises should be aware of the impact that an armed robbery (hold-up) can have on their business and on the health, safety and welfare of staff, customers and themselves.

Individuals must also realise that armed robberies can happen anywhere including but not limited to:

  • Work  
  • In a Park  
  • In the street  
  • On public transport

  • In a convenience store  
  • In a garage  
  • Bank or  
  • Credit Union  


Home. An armed robbery at your house or unit would be considered a home invasion, it is very important that you take propper precautions to prevent unwanted people in your home, this could be but not limited to security doors,security screens for your windows, secure fencing, sensor lighting or possibly a large dog.

Work. Depending on where you work will dictate your risk of being robbed, if you work in a guarage at night on your own there will be a big chance that at some time you will be the victim of an armed robbery, if you work in the city in an office there is a smaller chance of being involve in an armed robbery.

In a park. Never walk in an area where people can hide, this includes parks and any unlit area, it is much safer to walk in well lit areas than to take a short cut through a dangerous area even if it takes longer to get to where you are going.

In the street. Avoid area that are secluded such as lanes and streets that are lined with graffeti, stick to streets that have a high volume of traffic as criminal such as robbers don't like to have witnesses.

In your car. Avoid parking your car in secluded areas or car parks that have dark areas where a robber may hide, lock your doors when your are driving and keep your hand bags out of site.

Convenience store. Conveinence stores are targeted by robbers because they are considered as easy targets, another location where you are at risk of being robbed.

Banks and Credit Unions. Banks and credit unions have the best security possible and are considered a very hard target by robbers, if your work in a bank or credit union these day you could be considered but there is still a chance of being robbed.

Summary. Regardless of where you live of work there is a chance that you could become a victim of an armed robbery, you should consider how you would react if confronted by a robber, your main consideration should be your safety and the safety of others.
